I imagine it's pretty common to find American Avocets around the alkali ponds around the hot springs. This fall you should be able to find them there again, but in winter plumage (no rust/red head). I've had great views of Avocets and Phalaropes in the alkali ponds on Benton Crossing Rd. before the dump turn-off.
