Red-shouldered Hawk eats "Butterball" in Bishop

Observers: Chris Howard and Rosie Beach
Email: choward@telis.org
Remote Name: 209.209.67.239
Date: 11/29/02
Time: 08:13 AM

When we threw our leftover turkey carcass over the back fence this morning, we expected Black-billed Magpies would find it right away...but we didn't expect an adult Red-shouldered Hawk to snatch the largest piece and fly into a nearby tree to devour it! We had never heard of Red-shouldereds eating birds or carrion before! Anyway, it looks as if it had a good Thanksgiving!

(Photographed at right perched on carcass.)

(Relaxing after "Butterball" breakfast.)
