Costa's Hummingbird male in our yard today Meadowcreek (Bishop)

Observers: D.Parker
Email: jimndebbyatqnet.com
Verification: sierra
Remote Name: 209.221.223.23
Date: 12/19/2006
Time: 07:02 PM -0500

The thermometer read 14 deg. F this morning, so hope this guy does OK. He's in our juniper tree hedge right now and coming into our hummingbird feeders. This is a full adult male with a purple or black gorget, depending on the light & angle, which continues over his crown. The corners of the gorget extend out to a point and are narrow at tip like a handle-bar moustache. Below his purple gorget is a white "collar" and there is more white above the tips in the auricular area. His black bill is medium length and slightly curved down. His primaries are only slightly longer than his short subtly double-tipped tail. I saw him at 2:45 PM initially. What a treat!
