Whimbrel, Solitary Sandpiper @ Dixon Lane pondObservers: Chris and Rosie Howard SightingThis morning (21 April) at 7:00AM there was a Whimbrel and a Solitary Sandpiper in a small seasonal pond north of Dixon Lane, east of Green Gate Cottonwoods. The bill of the Whimbrel was not as long as a Long-billed Curlew, and it had a strongly contrasting dark eyeline and lateral crown stripes. The Solitary Sandpiper was roughly the size of a Lesser Yellowlegs, but had a bold white eyering and mostly dark back. When it flew, the tail was dark centered, unlike the white tail base of a yellowlegs. There was also a small flock of peeps (Least's?) and two Killdeer. Copyright Eastern Sierra Audubon Society.
