Many thanks to Larry Blakely for providing perfect directions to a really successful lek (see E.S. Birding Hot Spots). I arrived the gate to the lek at about 5:45 (45 min drive from Bishop) and was in awe as I saw how many grouse were out in the meadow - strutting there stuff. I counted 114 birds, approx. 75% male. The females seemed to lose interest quickly after sunrise and left. Soon, the males disbanded following the females up into the sagebrush. Note: Dress warmly and bring a scope.
