A first of spring Calliope Hummingbird was seen 6 & 7 Apr in our backyard. Interesting is that it was a female and usually males are first seen. But this is a "late" arrival, earliest ever is 26 Mar, and may reflect that most of the males went through without being noticed. Today (7 Apr) Jon Dunn had a singing Cassin's Vireo near Bishop which is 2 days earlier than the earliest ever. Tom had a singing House Wren, finally, which is the first we've heard. Our goldfinches have left with 1-2 Americans and 4-5 Lessers remaining, most banded. Strange comings and goings with early departures of some birds and late arrivals of others. Makes for more questions than answers.
