About noon today (1/21/2001) a female long-tailed duck (formerly called Oldsquaw) was found at Klondike Lake, east of Highway 395, south of Bishop and only a few miles north of Big Pine in Inyo County. The duck was easily seen from the south and east shores of the lake, which are accessible via the dirt road that leaves Hwy 395 at the Eastern Sierra Audubon info sign. Let's hope it stays around for a while for others to see it. It is very rare away from the coast and is only the seventh Inyo County record of this species.
