While birding on the Inyo NF, at Johnston Lake, near Devil's Postpile NM, we spied this female diving and quietly sitting in this shallow lake surrounded by a beautiful forest setting. The reference guides say that this species heads north in summer and is virtually gone from our latitudes during the summer breeding season. They can be found in northern California in summer but both "Birds of Yosemite and the East Slope" and Heindel's graphs show no buffleheads in summer months. We'll check the lake again soon to see if she is still hanging around or just try to figure out what she's up to.
