After reading, in the current Living Bird, that Acorn Woodpeckers are non-migratory and depend on their granary trees for winter sustenance, we began to wonder why they are regularly seen hereabouts. So we buzzed up to the Mount Whitney Fish Hatchery today and, sure enough, immediately spotted two (really spiffy) Acorn Woods. We still wonder what they are doing here, if they are "non-migratory." With plenty of oak trees available on (duh!) Oak Creek, might there not be a small "non-migratory" population there? Any input on this subject would be most welcome.
