This past weekend at Tomales I saw the following: Common & Pacific Loon, Clark's, Western & Pie-billed Grebe, Brown Pelican, Double-crested & Brandt's Cormorant, Snowy & Great Egret, GBH, Scoter (too far away to make a positive ID), Barrow's & Common Goldeneye, Black Oystercatcher, Marbled Godwit, Willet, Black Turnstone, Heermann's, Mew, Herring, California, & Western Gull, Forster's & Least Tern, Common Murre, Turkey Vulture, Black-shouldered Kite, Northern Harrier, Red-shouldered Hawk, Osprey, Califronia Quail, Great Horned Owl, Anna's Hummingbird, Belted Kingfisher (and nest hole), Northern Flicker (RS), Black Pheobe, Scrub Jay, American Crow, Common Raven, Nashville & Yellow-rumped (Audubon) Warbler, Spotted & California Towhee, Song, Sage & White-crowned (gambelii) Sparrow, Western Meadowlark, American & Lesser Goldfinch. Almost all of the pelagic birds were spotted from a kayak. This is a great way to get close up to many species at Tomales Bay. Many of the birds seem to be use to people in small boats like kayaks so they allow you to get pretty close.
