While working west of highway 6 along the North McNally Canal, I heard the distinctive ascending "what" call of Phainopeplas. The birds gave enough calls that I was able to determine that they wern't the ascending one note calls of WEKI's. About a minute after the initial calls two male Phainopeplas were flying and landing on the scrub to the west of my position.
