On 27 Jan James found 3 pelicans at Tinemaha Reservoir. Tom had received an "Early Warming" post on Sunday from Susan Steele, of Ridgecrest, that 3 had just taken off from China Lake and were flying north. This is a month earlier than the normal avant-garde and two months earlier than the regular rush. James also found the Northern Shrike while Tom saw a Great Egret, rare in winter. At Steward Lane Tom found a female Merlin of the nominate race, columbarius.
