Prairie Merlin at Sunland alfalfa fields

At 1:00PM (30 Nov) I walked portions of the Sunland alfalfa fields looking for longspurs. No dice on the 'spurs, but a handsome richardsonii Merlin flyby was a treat. I think richardsonii is more rare than the nominate race, columbarius, in the Eastern Sierra. Its back was blue-gray, becoming darker toward the wingtips. There was hardly any trace of a 'moustache'. It's not too cold when the wind isn't blowing...
