You'll never know what will come to your feeder when all other food is covered in snow. This morning (6 Jan 05) we were glad to see a Vesper Sparrow defending the obsidian stone under our thistle feeder where clumsy goldfinches drop seed. This is the first time we can remember having a Vesper Sparrow in our yard. It was finely streaked in front, had a small bill, white eye-ring, pale spot in the center of the auriculars, and when sparring with White-crowneds, we could see white outer tail feathers.
