This female woodpecker is the size of a Hairy Woodpecker but with no spotting on the wings. The wings are solid black with some spots on the outer edge. Head is bold black and white striped with black on top, white above the eye and black extending to the back of the head along the eyeline. The underparts are white and has a white patch on it's back. I've seen a male with a small red patch at the back of the head, otherwise marked just as the female. It could be a subspecies of Hairy Woodpecker or one that is a California bird. Any info would help.
