We had a very successful Death Valley CBC on 1/3/08. 12 birders from 2 states scouring the count circle in near-perfect weather found 1051 individual birds and 53 species (57 species for count week). Highlights included fall/winter RUSTY BLACKBIRD (photos below), BROWN CREEPER, COMMON MOORHEN, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (heard). Also of note were 2 ROSS’S GEESE, no Inca doves, and high-count day totals (for the last 10 years) for 13 species. Thanks to all who participated. Special thanks to Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Inc. for permission to bird the interior of the Furnace Creek golf course which is on private property and Death Valley National Park for permission to bird inside the fence of the NPS sewer lagoons (both areas are normally closed to birders).
