Go north/west out of Bishop on US 395 to Brockman Lane (there's a gas station at the NW
corner). Turn right (north). Go 0.6 miles to a canal, where you can park on the dirt
shoulder. Drift gates (be sure to close them after passing through) give access to the
areas on either side of the road. You can follow a dirt road to the west through the
wooded area known among local birders as Finkbeiner Woods - one of local birder John
Finkbeiner's favorite spots. Roaming along the road and paths to the east of Brockman Lane
will take you along a tree-lined canal and through meadows bedecked, in Spring, with acres
of Iris.
The Green Gate Cottonwoods area is accessed off Dixon Lane; proceed north on Brockman
Lane, go east on Dixon Lane, and look for the the green gate on the north side. Park off
the road on the shoulder. Many rare and unusual birds have turned up at the Green Gate
Cottonwoods area, including Red-faced Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Dusky-capped
Flycatcher, Gray Catbird, Phainopepla, Bald Eagle, Brown Creeper,
Yellow-billed Cuckoo, and Magnolia Warbler.
