North Haiwee Reservoir
Haiwee is now closed to the public
What's There:
The north end of Haiwee Reservoir is easily reached off US 395 south of
Olancha.
Migrating and resident waterfowl will be found on the reservoir waters, and a variety of
other birds can be observed in the riparian habitat adjacent to the north end dam. Bald
eagles are regularly seen here in winter.
Directions:
The Cactus Flats Rd./US 395 junction (see map), is opposite the Olancha Fire Station on
US 395. This is just south of the Ranch Motel, and 2.1 mi south of the junction with the
Death Valley Rd, SR 190. Cactus Flats Rd. is paved for 1.4 mi, then a good dirt road to a
small parking area under large willows, just north of the dam. Total distance from US 395
is 2.5 mi. From the parking area walk south on the road to a passage through the fence on
the right, and continue out onto the dam. A lush riparian area is reached by crossing over
the dam and working one's way south. (DeLorme So. CA map, p. 39, C7.)
