14 July 2002...At noon today we observed and photographed a second summer Arctic Tern at Crowley Reservoir, originally found by John Sterling on 7 July. The bird was seen on the NE side, between Layton Springs and the Owens River delta. The bird was usually seen foraging low over the water with Forster's Terns, making for good comparison. Marks making this bird an Arctic include the dark carpal bar, pale gray primaries, long tail, and short legs.
Note dark carpal bar and lighter gray inner primaries.
