I've heard Alaska is a great place to see Sandhill Cranes in summer, although some populations breed as far south as northern Nevada. Sandhill Cranes are decidedly absent from southern California in summer; the earliest fall migrants show up in September.
As for Yellow-billed Cuckoo, the best breeding stronghold in California is the Kern River Preserve.
