Description

I heard a Varied Thrush this morning, calling repeatedly as I sipped my coffee on the stoop. On Wilson Creek: a Swamp Sparrow, a Lincoln's Sparrow, 6 Western Meadowlarks, a Prairie Falcon terrorizing the pipits, who took revenge by mobbing an adult Loggerhead Shrike. Mill Creek: The first Bufflehead I've seen on Mono Lake this fall, a Southwest Great Horned Owl at ten paces, a second Loggerhead Shrike mobbed by squat and daring Mountain Chickadees. Only the second and third shrikes I have seen up here all fall.
