On 7 Nov a first fall Surf Scoter was at Klondike Lake. They are rare (reported in very small numbers every year) from mid Oct to mid Dec in Inyo County. One Merlin, an immature 'columbarius', was south of Big Pine. This species is a rare winter visitor in the Owens Valley but from late Sep to early Dec when they are passing through to their wintering grounds they are considered uncommon.
