Sighting

On horseback behind mule mountain around 4:30 p.m., a Brewer's sparrow was singing upslope. I recognized the song thanks to the Roger Tory Peterson CDs. Walking near Millpond, a red-tailed hawk sailed in low. There was a "beenk" sound far to the right. The hawk made a soft "kew" sound. Shortly I heard an agitated shrike, and looked in the distance to see the red-tail struggling out of some large bushes. A flash of black and white flew straigt up and down at the hawk.
