Sighting

Juvenile Nuttall's Woodpeckers, both male & female, have red caps that almost touch the eye and contain small white speckles. Adult males have smaller solid red caps that are on the back of the head (nape) and barely reach the mid crown. It is likely that the Overholts had a family of Nuttall's which are a fairly common species in the Owens Valley.
