Sighting

On 14 February there were 5 Clark's Grebes at Klondike Lake. These are our first of spring. The expected species now are Westerns but the whitish flanks at the waterline were a clue that these weren't Westerns. All had their heads tucked but in the scopes the red eye was clearly seen in the white confirming our initial impressions. At Tinemaha Reservoir were 15 Tundra Swans, 6 American White Pelicans (first of spring), 4 Greater Yellowlegs and 1 Long-billed Dowitcher. There were 4 Bald Eagles in the area: 1 immature (only seen from the back) at Klondike Lake and 3 at Tinemaha, 1 juvenile, 1 second winter, and 1 adult. Last was a cooperative Merlin, of the race columbarius, on Steward Lane.
