Sighting

On 4 Apr an adult male Broad-tailed Hummingbird came in to the feeder just outside my kitchen window. I saw the beautiful rosy red throat at it looked back at me and then when it dipped its bill back into the feeder I saw the green crown and head! As I watched it watch me again, I saw that the green didn't go all the way across the breast and belly, like an Anna's Hummingbird, but was restricted to the sides. This is the second earliest record for Inyo County. The earliest was 21 March at Tollhouse, and the next two records occurred on 8 April: 1991 at Saline Valley and 1995 at Big Pine. Most records are not until the later part of April which probably reflects birder distribution rather than Broad-tailed Hummingbird distribution.
