She or he was first spotted at the mid-point along the reservoir much whiter looking than the other duck nearby. Diving often it had a mostly whitish head with a smudgy gray crown and cheek patch. Her bill was short and rounded. Dark eye in a whitish face. Back was black with contrasting two long plumes across the back. White in front changing to black on sides then white in flanks. Short black tail above and white undertail. This sea dweller had a distinct way of diving, it would drop its head first into water, spreading its wings out and seemingly sink down underwater. It did stay under for a long time compared to other diving ducks we watched.
