At about 3:45 p.m. (13 January) we (Kevin and I) found a Short-eared Owl in Round Valley just north of Birchim Lane along the Sherwin Grade Road (just south of the spur that connects back to U.S. 395. It was perhaps a half mile to the west. It was actively hunting by this time. There are many Northern Harriers present too (some six to seven). We went up and got Mike and Debbie House and returned and saw two Short-eared Owls. We had slightly better views from the other side looking east from North Round Valley Road, perhaps a mile north of 40 Acres. There's a dirt road there that takes you east towards the fields. The birds landed at times on posts, but were mostly hunting in flight, sometimes quite high. We did not see Jim and Debbie Parker's immature Rough-legged Hawk. Jon
