On 20 June, I first heard, then saw a male Rufous Hummingbird at 9AM in the South Lake parking lot, 9746 ft. As soon as I pulled my red daypack from the car, I heard the distinctive wing trill of a male Selasphorous. I turned around to see it hovering a few feet from me. It must have thought my pack was a giant flower. I was able to see the entirely rufous body and back, and whitish forecollar before it did an about face and buzzed off over the restroom toward the lake. According to the Inyo County Heindel Graphs version 2, this sighting moves the earliest fall migrant date up two days.
