Sharon our Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers (Interior West) have much less spotting on the wings than the ones they often show in the field guides which might be Eastern. They also show Taiga or Pacific color morphs. The way to tell a Downy from a Hairy is by voice, by horizontal black barring on the outside tailfeathers in Downy (Downy does Hairy hasn't) and by the size of the bill. Hope this helps! Good observation on the amount of white in the wings.
