Scratch, scratch, scratch... We've got a Sooty Fox Sparrow in our backyard and it's doing what it does best, the Fox Sparrow shuffle. This bird has a dark brown head and back (no streaks), and mostly dark-brown-splotched breast. The lower mandible is yellow and so is the base of the upper mandible. Sooty is the race that breeds from Coastal British Columbia to the Aleutians. We think this bird is of the lighter-brown unalascensis group that breeds from the Aleutians to the northern Alaskan panhandle.
