Eastern Sierra Audubon Bird-a-thon

Bird-a-thon at Owens Lake

International Migratory Bird Day (see http://www.birdday.org/) is an independent assessment of avian abundance and diversity performed by birders around the world.  The ESAS uses the Inyo County IMBD totals to base our Bird-a-thon fundraiser. See previous IMBD results here.

Eastern Sierra Audubon holds our annual Bird-a-Thon fundraising effort to coincide with the Christmas Bird Count. In 2013, it will be held on Saturday, December 14th. Anyone can participate in the count which is a major effort to monitor the numbers and distribution of bird species throughout the Western Hemisphere. Simply put, the Christmas Bird Count is citizen science in action. How many can we find in one day? Last year, Eastern Sierra Audubon birders tallied over 100 species!

The ESAS Bird-a-thon is a fun challenge, but the challenge doesn’t end in one day. The challenge of our Birds-in-the-Classroom program is to educate youth about the importance of our natural environment and protecting important habitat in the Eastern Sierra. When you participate or sponsor a participant, you play a vital role in keeping the Eastern Sierra Audubon chapter alive and well. The Bird-a-Thon is the chapter's most important fundraiser, and your donations fund the Birds in the Classroom program and other great educational and conservation programs right here in the eastern Sierra.

We hope to continue to add schools to this program with your help and support. Funds are also needed for ESAS's other educational programs, outreach, field trips and to maintain the website and newsletter. Even a donation of $10 or $20 would go far to help us in our mission.
